Return journey

Well the RAFRU IDRC squad left RAAF Richmond in pooring rain as we all thought 'a sign of things to come' with our return flight back to the UK via Kuala Lumpa due to depart some 5 hrs later.  Everyone seems in good spirits on the initial 8hr flight from Sydney and as we sit in Kuala Lumpa airport we now contenplate the 6+ hrs wait for our additional 12+ hr flight back to Heathrow and our wonderful British weather.

This is highly likley to be the very last post on this blog however if you require any further information or photos please do not hesitate to contact me and I will do my best to help where possible at the following address which will remain active until the 1st Dec 11.

Saturday 15th - Friday 20th Oct

Well, the competition is well and truly over now for the RAFRU IDRC squad as on the Saturday we moved from our adopted home of RAAF Glenbrook in the blue mountains to the relative hustle and bustle of RAAF Richmond some 25km north. All that is left to say on this chapter is a very big thank you to all the personnel at RAAF Glenbrook for the tremendous support throughout our time there; it is very very much appreciated.

Very special thanks to Raelene & Janet who looked after us so well, thank you.

Sunday saw the head coach Tug return to RAF Brize Norton and to his key role as FS movements which required him to return to base as soon as possible. It also saw our team Doctor Wg Cdr Clive Monkley decide that he was best employed at the beck and call of one Reggie Reid who was recovering in St Vincent’s hospital in Sydney, unfortunately for the Doc as it was the weekend we were unable to secure any military accommodation for him.......so being the fine officer he is he volunteered himself to stay in a local hotel!

Wg Cdr (Doc) Clive Monkley

During the week the squad has continued to train and make best use of the time together to provide a strong foundation that will take it forward in both the U23 and senior XV Interservice Competition. It was also the time when the Australians decided to turn on that great big heater in the sky......nice. The squad are making good use of local facilities especially the swimming pool and the ice cream machine in the mess, which is now starting to work overtime!!

The training regime was now lead by Fish our very mild mannered coach whose strong approach to forward play and love of contact resulted in the players understanding what the level of contact would be required in the IS competitions. Unfortunately Alfie Myles was injured in one of the contact areas resulting in an ambulance being called and him being escorted to the local military hospital by Sqn Ldr Pete Lilly our resident sports therapist. Initial results are inconclusive on the exact limit of the damage however cruciate ligaments are suspected.

With the guys training so hard twice daily over the past 3 weeks it was also the opportunity for the management team to allow them time to enjoy our wonderful hosts country with a bit of free time. Thursday was also a big day where we were also reunited to James 'Reggie' Reid following his operation having broken his tib & fib. Reggie was eager to see the facilities at RAAF Richmond and especially the wifi as all we have heard off him for the past week is 'I have no internet and cannot do anything'. Well the RAAF Richmond internet system lived up to its hyper and allowed Reggie to log on then immediately mysteriously turn itself off........much to Reggie’s frustration.

On a slightly funnier side Alfie decided to come with me to Sydney to collect Reggie, with less then 20 mins to Sydney we received a call from the Doc informing us that the lads had 'accidentally' taken Reggie’s shoes and as such he had nothing to wear on his one good foot to leave the hospital. That was until we realised that Alfie and Reggie who were both on crutches were the same size shoe, size 9. Alfie had damaged his left leg where Reggie had damaged his right, so the solution was easy Alfie lost his right trainer and sock and Reggie's little problem was solved. There are photo's available and when possible they will be uploaded - they do portray them both in the best tradition of the show 'Inbetweeners' as Shoe Friend's!  That said looks like Alfie has had the last laugh as I have just been infromed that he appears to have won £1000 of the RAF Sports lottery!

"Shoe friends, best friends"
aka - Alfie & Reggie

The squad is now not due to get together until Monday 24th Oct where we will make the final preparations for our return back to the UK. I will still try to make regular updates however the temperamental wifi access may dictate otherwise, additionally it makes it almost impossible to upload photos.

Regards

Eric

Friday, 14th October

Daily bloggers: Rhys Williams & Lloyd Owen

Today Started with a welcome lie in, the first timing of the day was a parade at midday in the officers mess. There were a few glum faces after the loss yesterday.

During lunch the boys were told that they were to attend a wreath laying ceremony in Sydney city centre. It wouldn't be a reeth laying ceremony without a spot of marching, certain older members struggled more than others and toppers hall was spotted tick tocking..... He should know better. The ceremony was followed by a reception in Sydney rugby club, hosted by some of dave currys mates from World War II who were happy to share some interesting bag off stories.

The evening was taken up by packing for the move to Richmond tomorrow where we will be staying for the rest of our stay and a farewell function in the falcon club officers to thank everyone for their kind hospitality.

Tomorrow is a big day fior the welsh members of the squad, Dai Carey is anxious for the Wales semi final.

Thursday, 13 October

Hello again from Tim Coghlan and Tom Gardner, Greco Roman wrestling enthusiasts. A weak sun is attempting to break through onto the Blue Mountains and birdsong is in the air. Today we are trying something new, the blog will be in the present tense! Brace yourselves.

We're currently sitting on the team bus en route to Sydney to stick it to the Aussie defence force in their own back yard.  The atmosphere is subdued, and the excitement in the air is palpable; especially as Tom looks over his shoulder and sees Josh 'Prostheto-leg' Nally dribbling in his sleep.

Game Time

The match didn't go quite as planned with a resounding win for the home team. The score being 13-0 at the break caused hope in the RAF team, however the Australians stepped it up a gear and we failed to keep our shape. Impact winger Gardner said "Certain individuals stepped up, one or two others failed to perform, Jonesy being subbed before half time butt. Josh Nally needs new legs after his amazing effort!"

We are now sat having a reflective picnic in the shadow of the Sydney Football Stadium, thinking about what could of been and how to take our side forward. The team now have a few spare hours before the closing ceremony at the Sydney Cricket Ground; our thoughts mainly being with vice skipper James 'Reggie' Reid after Lance Tallet broke his leg in the final minutes.

Tom and I are now having a few cheeky medicinal Tooheys to numb the pain in Darling harbour. Excellent scenic views, a massive flag, and good atmosphere. However both of us agree that this place has nothing on Bristol's harbour side... Even though Tommy G has never been.

Darling Harbour

The day has ended and a new one has dawned. The closing function of the Australian phase of the IDRC was a blast. The free beer really helped to encourage international relations. The welsh boys got a lesson in how to really sing by the Tongans and Samoans, they were fantastic! Harmonies and everything. We're really tired, so bye bye.

Tuesday, 11th October

Firstly appologies for the delay in these updates, unfrotunatley we lost our internet connection for a couple of days which meant very intermittant service!

Tuesday 11th October brings to you Anchormen Kibble & Craven!

We are now 15 days into the trip and the team have gotten into a strategic routine! Up at 7am to the warm sunshine and birds singing, don the chinos and polo shirts and head down to the officers mess for breakfast.
At 9am the bus departs for our adopted training home Penrith Emus stadium, where without fail the pitch had been freshly hydrated in reclaimed water! Training started with us basked in sunshine. Normally this would be seen as a positive, however everyone had to endure Lance 'Hellboy' Tallet's honking rig in the flesh.
After some defensive run-throughs the forwards cut away to hit the scrummage machine 'Ard, while the backs kissed it off in the sun (again..... forwards opinion) from a backs point of view, we spent valuable time perfecting our trade!
'Big' Ben Gilpin finally decided he felt like training after 15 days of chinning it off and preceded to annihilate the scrum machine. The session was a productive short sharp session with valuable team run throughs preparing us for the big game Thursday!
In the afternoon a team of intrepid explorers headed for the blue mountains. Charlie the team bus driver decided to give us a sniff of the delightful views on offer in this picturesque part of the country, stopping at echoes point to view the spectacular Three Sisters rock formation also giving chance for Rory 'the flash master' Wood to have his picture taken with the local wildlife (an actual life-size koala)

After we prized Rory away from his new found friend we headed to our destination Scenic World Blue Mountains in Katoomba!
On arrival it became apparent who were the men and mice of the group when we had to climb aboard the world steepest rail train to descend the mountain side. On the way down Tom 'Cornbeef calfs/Lego hair' Gardner gave out noises only dogs could hear, much to the amusement of the group! (pic)
On reaching the bottom we followed a short nature trail through the eucalyptus rainforest, although only a short walk Ben Gilpin's exertions at training proved too much, and he was ably assisted along by 'Horse Face' Tallet.

The short trail lead to a cable car which returned us to the summit 300 meters above much to Karl 'Blackout' Craven's excitement, Charlie the car operator literally had to wrestle the safety bar from him. 1600hrs we started the return journey back to Glenbrook when Craven decided to entertain a section of the bus with his new found blackberry app '5001 knowledgeable facts' which turns out are not that knowledgeable and Jimmy 'skip rat' Bargett took it upon himself to share his fountain of knowledge with us instead!
On return to Glenbrook Marco-Pierre Williams, RAF Cook extraordinaire, fired up the barbie and we all enjoyed steak and sunset on the veranda, while Team 'Essence' had a sausage-fest!!!!!
Oh and as we write Tim 'coaches-head' Cocklan, 'Legohair' Gardner and Lloyd 'Quentin' Owen are wrestling each other in their pants!!

Monday - 10th Oct

On the morning of Monday the 10th of October David Carey and Matt ‘the Rock’ Watkins took over the role of ‘duty bods’: their day started like any other, cloud and light rain filled the cold Penrith skies; Al Blewitt slurped down his early morning protein fix and the front row house, self-named Griffindor, waddled up the Officers’ Mess path for their usual three course breakfast.

The boys met at 0900 and after a quick change of clothing, training was underway; fortunately within minutes the weather changed and the boys were basking in the warm spring sun. After some focused passing drills and the normal Dave Hankinson warm up, the boys split down into forwards and backs.

The backs gathered together and, after removing their tops and smoothing sun cream on one another, undertook some basic passing exercises. Rory Wood’s scrum half pass required some direct mentoring from Head Coach Tug Wilson, but his advice paid off and Rory was throwing the ball around like a miniature Mike Philips.

Nathan Jones, a well known pilot at RAF Brize Norton, said ‘it was a great session this morning and I particularly enjoyed smoothing the sun cream over some of the younger players particularly Pilot Officer Lloyd Owen’.

The forwards undertook some lineout practise, running through all the moves including the driving mauls, before joining up with the backs for some final exercises. The oldest player in the team, Dave Curry, displayed some creative and unusual angles of running in the last exercise. The Head Coach, after noting ‘Old Man Currys’ enthusiasm, called a halt to the morning’s training.

The boys had a quiet afternoon, either shopping in Penrith or relaxing at RAAF Glenbrook: as the Quarter Final game approaches it is noticeable how the focus of the players is becoming more and more game focused. Most of the boys trained in the station gym in the evening and then settled to watch films in the mess or their respective accommodation blocks. To improve some players hand to eye coordination, the evening finished with some light Table Tennis training and the reason for Matt ‘the Rock’ Watkins nickname was evident as he struggled to move his feet after taking each shot.

In other news a Flash Hat has been instigated by the players committee to encourage all the boys to remain positive and avoid any negative emotional reactions to banter. The innovative action has paid off for all players with the exception of Tom Gardiner and Tim ‘Cofflan’ Coghlan who are now rarely seen without it. Lastly team Captain Jon ‘Toppers’ Hall has slightly annoyed his accommodation block by eating 17 of the 20 chocolate coconut cakes obtained ‘the Rock’ Watkins. His greed has caused a slight division in the accommodation block and a heavy fine is being considered.

Sat, Sun 8th & 9th Oct

The duty Bods for Saturday 8th and Sunday the 9th were Chris Davies, Ant Garland, Ady Gillespie and Al ‘Dot Cotton’ Blewitt.
Normal training sessions were undertaken both Saturday and Sunday with a lot of topless rugby to improve the tan lines. Sqn Ldr Rich Lane quickly followed suit and when he removed his T-Shirt all players and support staff were stunned by his horrendous set up, to such an extent that Eric dropped his pint of full fat milk and Alfie Myles cracked his first smile of the tour. To finish the session the squad took part in a focus handling session which required use of nicknames for both players and coaching staff. At this moment a whole range of nicknames were born such as badger teeth, badger feet, badger rig, fridge head, George Forman grill head and fridge head.....and that was just for Nathan Jones. The session was quickly brought to a close when one of the coaching staff who can’t be named (small baldy mans syndrome) flashed as the boys cried out for the return of Steve “barrel” Worrall. Both sessions were hard work with a lot taken from both. The squad were treated to both afternoons off in order to watch the quarter finals of the RWC.
By Saturday night all the gallant English boys were disappointed by their teams performance although Jimmy ‘The Muss’ Bardgett reckoned it would be very different if they had had more Northern Rugby League players in the squad. The dirty Taffs were overjoyed by the result and forced the whole squad to watch a replay of the welsh game on Sunday!

Today was the first training session since the New Zealand game and the day started well with myself (Matthew Morgan) thinking that somebody was missing on the bus.........until I realised I hadn't counted myself.

We headed down to the wonderful Penrith RFC where a 'beasting' awaited. Due to the NZ game being such a bruising encounter we were limited on numbers available to train. After training we headed to the officers mess where a BBQ was prepared for us on behalf of the Air Commander Australia Air Vice Marshal Skidmore who gave a short speech and was presented with an RAFRU tie.

After a busy morning we had a quite relaxed afternoon at a local zoo. Ant Gartland has now discovered his favourite animal a Koala Bear to which he grew quite attached. Some on the other hand decided to have a more relaxed afternoon and went to bed Dai Carey!

Thursday 6th Oct

Daily bloggers: Rory Wood & Richie Craig

This was the first day the tour party had off from their trainers, which was a delight to all members. After the disappointment of the previous day the boys were keen to take their minds away from the rugby field. A few of the boys went to Sydney to do some more shopping, whilst others headed to the golf course to see who was talking a great game and who was the dark horse on the golf course. The golf was won by Stuart 'the bandit' Knight who managed to convince everyone to give him a shot a hole because 'apparently' he hadn't played for over a year! Perhaps after his concussion from the previous day his memory wasn't functioning to its full potential.

The shoppers returned exhausted from all the sales that were on offer, thoroughly enjoying their time away from RAAF Glenbrook. The day ended with a roll call at 2100hrs for all players and a brief for the coming plans ahead. It was a much needed day of rest but now it’s back to business as usual with the prospect of a bruising encounter with the Australians in the quarter finals.

Wednesday 4th Oct

Duty Boys: James Bardgett and John Hall

Wednesday morning and a sunny day in Sydney for Gala day 2.

Following a brief breakfast and some able support to the duty boys from Nathan 'Badger Teeth' Jones and Dai 'White noise' Carey the squad were on the bus ready for trip to the T G Millner field in Eastwood to face New Zealand. After a bit of a false start at a random Sydney park, we finally made it to the pitch; thanks coach driver!

The match started following a rapid version of the national anthem and the infamous Haka to which we all fronted up. It is a great experience to face the Haka for real and one that none of the boys will never forget.

Unfortunately the match didn't quite meet everyone's expectations and New Zealand ran out winners by 51-0. The score certainly doesn't reflect the patterns of the game or the effort of all the player, but the clinical nature of the Kiwis was obvious.

The match however, was not without incident. Stu '30 seconds' Knight was out cold without touching the ball and was subsequently carried off within 30 seconds. Fortunately for him the super fast Australian ambulance reacted in twice the time Stu was on the pitch and helped Stu to realise that he wasn't in England or New Zealand! He's fine but his pride has taken a bit of a dent.

After an afternoon of rugby in the sun and watching Australia (our The coaching staff have given the lads some free time to convalesce after watching a decent Army side beat the French Defence Force, good times all round. The day was topped off with a sing a long of the squad song, a canny version of the Home and Away theme tune.

Another day of average weather in what is supposed to be sunny Australia. A select number of backs travelled to Penrith Panthers Rugby League ground to do their hair and tell each other how good they are! An hour later the rest of the squad turned up to receive the team announcement from the coaching staff. A very lethargic team run prompted a stern word from the gaffa, sparking the team into life. When the team finished a well improved team run through, it was called a day and moved onto team photos with Tug Wilson discovering a major fear of heights.

Presenting a shirt to the Panthers new skipper Luke Lewis, with the Boss describing the pitch with every adjective possible. A coach trip back to RAAF Glennbrook, the squad were stood down for rest of day and half the squad went down shopping to Penrith. House of grifindoor decide to explore their feminine side, staying in watching chick flicks. Chris Davis decided to experiment with hair removal cream, with catastrophic outcomes. A Team meeting to calm pre-match nervs ends another productive day.

Monday 3 Oct - Bondi Beach

Good morning from Matt Brougham and Reggie Reid.  Monday has been a very busy day for the squad after being let off the leash for the first time last night.  The day started with an intense training session at Penrith RUFC.  Not the best start for young, but old looking prop Tim Coughlin as he forgot his boots!  The session involved a bit of a blow out including body position at the breakdown with extra rucking thrown in to the mix in order to separate the men from the boys and the backs from the forwards!

After a quick turnaround and some food from the mess the squad waited for Flt Lt Nathan Jones (standard) as an afternoon session was planned for Bondi Beach.  With hundreds of onlookers, most of them wondering why we were running around in shorts and t-shirt on the windiest day of the year, the squad were put through their paces in defensive organization and attacking structure.   A relatively short session, but equally as tough on the legs due to the sand.  After another short wait for Nathan Jones we squad headed to local Westfield in order to be fed and watered and have a look around the shops that only Donald Trump and Lord Sugar could afford to shop in!

A quiet night was had by all with a little rugby catch up on the TV and a few more hours spent on Facebook!

Speak to you again soon.  Matt and Reggie

Our very keen medical support staff, WC Clive Monkley (Dr) & Sqn Ldr Peter Lilly (Sports Therapist)

Bloggers: Dave Curry & Nathan Jones.

After a good win yesterday we had a light morning session planned for the field at RAAF Glenbrook.  Due to yet more rain the session was changed to the gym.  Our token PTI, Dave Hankinson took us through some stretching exercises and we then has 40 mins of light weights.  After this it was to the outdoor pool for a dip in the rain.  Chris Davies described this experience as a mild heart attack!  After a short 15 mins we went for showers then lunch.

After lunch it was a players meeting in the TV room to pay up fines collected so far.  A very costly session for some conducted by the main enforcer Dai Carey.  Once this was finished the squad was given the afternoon off.  Although the squad was given the option to have a drink we had a few waters and rested watching a DVD and had an early night not wanting to spoil the fitness gained.

30 Sep - Day 4

Bloggers of the day - Alfie Myles & Ben Gilpin

The day started with another glorious breakfast in the Glenbrook combined mess, before making our way down to Penrith RFC, which must have seemed like a home from home for Johnny Walmsley as we were greeted by a burnt out car upon arrival. Training got off to a great start with another of Hankinson’s ‘Oz aerobics style’ warm ups comprising of a number of pelvic thrusting movements. The team stepped up the intensity with a very drawn out morning, with backs fine tuning strike moves, defensive patterns, restarts and their hairstyles for tomorrow, whilst the forwards, as usual, just hugged each other all morning. During the team run through the decision was made to go shirts v skins. This in hindsight was a bad call from the management as Tallett, once again, displayed his high waisted shorts tactic in an attempt to cover his flabby lower rig. The afternoon consisted of a trip to Penrith plaza, which was cut short by two and a half hours as Hankinson had again requested more pelvic thrusting! Tonight’s team meeting has got everyone up for the challenge that lies ahead and we are very confident of producing the goods.

Photo's from todays events

Panoramic veiws of the RAF IDRC squad, the Sydney Opera house and bridge.

Our version of the 'offical' photo.

RAFRU IDRC squad Captain Flt Lt Jonathan Hall officially meets Gen Hurley (Australian CDF)

Opening Ceremony

Lloyd Owen outside back extraordinaire and Rhys Williams specialist utility front row (hooker) here blogging about our second full day in Australia.  Today started early with a trip to Sydney.  Our first stop was Mrs Macquires chair for a team photo.  On the way in we managed to squeeze in a little property auction with the proceeds going in to the tour kitty and leaving Josh McNally $25 down due to him being an absolute admin vortex.  All six teams based in Sydney were there to have there photos taken in front of the Sydney opera house and Sydney harbour bridge although none looked as essensence as the RAF Welsh contingent!

Then it was back on the bus for a quick tour of Sydney, it was just a shame Lance Tallet had better patter than the driver/tour guide.  The next stop was Sydney Cricket Ground (SGC) where a reception was held for the six Sydney based teams to declare the IDRC officially open by General Hurley.  That was then followed by a buffet of epic proportion; thankfully Lance was fed in the stable to keep the mess to a minimum.  The tour of the SCG and Sydney Football Stadium (SFS) was made extra enjoyable by our extremely fruity tour guide.  This concluded our day in Sydney and it was back time to head back to RAAF Glenbrook.  Out next point of call was the Sgt’s mess for their ‘pay day raffle’ and nibbles.  Training started at Penrith stadium under flood lights.  The standard of work was greatly improved from yesterday we even witnessed sidesteps from certain people!  We then returned to a hearty BBQ under the watchfully eye of a possum and huntsman spider (see below).  It was a good day had by all we even managed to get a few smiles out of the head coach!  Thank you and goodnight.

Wednesday, 28 September 2011

Hi, this is Tom Gardener, utility back and Tim Coughlan specialist front row giving the first players blog of the IDRC 2011. We aim to give a player perspective of the competition and we can only hope to emulate Eric’s fine literature style!
We’re still not 100% from the journey; Josh Mcnally’s legs have only just stopped swelling over his boots, Lloyds head is slowly returning to its normal shape, however Lance’s head is still swollen.  Our recovery is being aided by the fantastic facilities here at RAAF Glenbrook, especially with a excellent breakfast this morning, some very dapper attire is being sported by the boys in the Officers Mess however, how long some of the attire will fit is questionable as Rory ‘2 Puds’ Wood lived up to his name.
After breakfast we set off for our first full days training session at Penrith Rigby Club Football Club.  Excellent efforts and positive attitude helped us move on to set pieces and backs moves.  The forwards took an intense and physical scrimmage session, where competition for places proved to be fierce.  Josh ‘Prosthetic leg’ McNally decided he wasn’t cut out for the tight five and went to watch the backs.  Our ¾’s started putting the pieces together for what will prove to be some effective strike moves in the IDRC.  The team collectively worked on defence, which we will use this season as a weapon to put us on the front foot.  As a reward for our efforts the coaching staff allowed us an hour in Penrith Westfield Plaza.  Unfortunately 5 boys were late back to the bus, the stench of punishment now hangs heavy in the air.
After another fine meal in the Glenbrook Officers Mess we held a team meeting.  The itinerary for the next few days was covered and levels of commitment expected of us.  There are fixed feelings of apprehension and excitement in the air now as the reality of our first fixture against PNG looms ahead.  Everyone is eager to play and desperate to be in the starting 15.  Dave Hankinson also introduced a morale boosting game called ‘the waiting’.

Finally here!

The squad finally arrive this morning bright and early into Sydney only to find the baggage handlers on strike! After a short delay they arrived at RAAF Glenbrook and were welcomed by the base commander and the LO's following room allocations and a quick change it was then time for lunch in the combined dinning hall in the Officer Mess. This was then followed by a 2 hr 'light' training sessions lead by the coaching team of Tug Wilson (Head Coach), Paul (Fish) Fisher (forwards coach) and Jason Brown (backs coach) not bad for a group of player that had spent 36 hrs travelling here with little to no sleep!

A short trip by the coaching and management team to check out our main training area was then followed by a very quick trip to the shops to buy the essentials then back to the mess for dinner. Early to bed for most of the player tonight as they will need there rest for tomorrow the first of many full on training sessions!!

RAAF Base Glenbrook awaits the RAFRU IDRC Squad's arrival

Within the next 24hrs the main party is due to arrive in Sydney for onward travel to RAAF Glenbrook, the base is relatively small and is home to the RAAF Air Command HQ. The base personnel are all looking forward to the squad’s arrival which does seem to be the talk of the place!

Shortly after their expected arrival they will be given various briefings first by Gp Capt Grigson a very experienced officer and avid rugby supporter and former player himself who has experienced the 'British' way of life first hand having served as an exchange officer at units including RAF Innesworth. The squad will be introduced to the three liaison officers who will continue with the local briefings before we expect to break for lunch. Shortly after that it is expected that the head coach Tug Wilson will then start off as he means to go on by taking the first of many training sessions, a matter of hours after their arrival and at least 34 hrs since there journey began.

Advanced party arrives

Well finally got here after leaving RAF Cosford on Monday and arrived at 1930hrs on Wednesday evening local time. I was picked up by one of our three RAAF liaison officers Flt Lt Jason Wirth who kindly showed me around Sydney at night and then we drove back the approximately 35 mins to RAAF Glenbrook which is situated high on the first mountain as you head towards the Blue Mountains.

Woke up this morning to wonderful sunshine, only to be told it's due to rain over the weekend! Never mind a 2.30hrs meeting with Jason proven very useful to iron out a couple of issues and also uncover a few others however the scenery from the officers mess is simply breathtaking!

Advance party due to depart

The advance party for the Royal Air Force Rugby Union squad is due to depart to Australia early next week in order to prepare the way for the main party a week later. The competition will pit twelve teams from ten different nations in what is being billed as the first International Defence Rugby World Cup. The teams include the Australian, French, New Zealand, Tonga, South African & Papua New Guinea Defence Forces, People's Liberation Army of China, Samoa Police & the Australian Federal Police teams whilst not forgetting our very own sister services the Royal Navy and British Army. So although numerically the UK armed forces have a great chance of success they are the only single service representatives from any of the nations entering the competition.
